Building Hope
We met Ranjani last year in Sri Lanka, when she was a homeless widow. After her husband’s sudden death, she lost not only her partner and the father of her two young daughters, but also her home. The stability and safety her family once knew disappeared almost overnight, leaving Ranjani and her daughters vulnerable and at risk of becoming some of the 27.6 million victims of global human trafficking.
The direct link between homelessness and human trafficking is stark, with 68% of trafficked persons experiencing homelessness at the time of victimization, with South Asia containing the highest absolute number of trafficked persons globally. We knew that Ranjani and her daughters needed immediate protection. Thankfully, with the support of our generous donors and our partnership with United Christian Fellowship of Sri Lanka, land was secured, and construction began on a new home for Ranjani’s family.
Recently, the Serve To LEAD team visited Ranjani to celebrate her new home. She proudly showed us her daughters’ sports medals, their school achievements, and shared her happiness about working at a local hospital. With tears in her eyes, she thanked everyone who helped her family saying “this home represents hope.”
