The Role of Toilets in Education
W.A.S.H. and World Change (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)
Around the world, millions of children are returning to the classroom. However, 1 in 5 girls in developing nations will not complete their education. Why? Girls often miss school or drop out altogether when they lack access to school bathrooms, don’t have hygiene products, or are forced to isolate and face social stigma during menstruation. Serve To LEAD is changing this dynamic for thousands across the globe as we construct safe and secure bathroom facilities, provide hygiene products, and advance the lives of children and youth through education, creating career opportunities and pathways out of poverty.
In addition to the hardships faced by girls who don’t have access to clean and secure bathrooms, all children, youth, and adults are adversely affected when this vital infrastructure doesn’t exist. Toilets and proper washing facilities can aid in the prevention of many diseases, parasites, and diarrhea—which kills over 1200 children worldwide each day. Annually, that’s 438,000 children whose lives could be saved if they had access to what many of us take for granted daily.
Kids staying in school and healthy adults able to work advance lives and reduce poverty! Join Serve To LEAD as we change lives and livelihoods through our global W.A.S.H. projects.
We plan to construct 10 new community bathrooms in Sri Lanka and 30 new home bathrooms in the Dominican Republic before the end of 2024. Your contribution is crucial to achieving this goal. These 40 new bathroom facilities will cost $50,000. By sponsoring a bathroom, you can directly change a life today. Your support is not just a donation, it’s a lifeline for those in need.
